Guns don't kill people.

Irresponsible people with guns kill people. Read any newspaper.

Guns are used to intimidate and threaten 4 to 6 times more often than they are used to thwart crime (Hemenway, p. 269).

http://www.ingentaconnect.com/conten...00003/art00003

A gun in the home is 7 times more likely to be used in a criminal assault or homicide than to be used to injure or kill in self-defense (Kellermann, p. 263).

http://journals.lww.com/jtrauma/Abst...e_Home.10.aspx

The U. S. has a higher homicide rate than comparable developed countries with strong gun laws.

A study of Seattle, WA and Vancouver, Canada found similar overall rates of criminal activity and assault, but the relative risk of death from homicide was 63 percent higher in Seattle. All of the excess risk was explained by a 5-fold higher risk of being murdered with a handgun in Seattle.

http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/...ct/319/19/1256

In 2008, the U. S. homicide rate was 5.4 per 100,000 population (FBI, Table 1). Sixty-seven percent of homicides were committed with guns (FBI, Table 8).

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/index.html

By comparison, in 2007, the homicide rate in Canada was 1.8 (Statistics Canada, Homicide Offences).

http://www40.statcan.gc.ca/l01/cst01/legal12b-eng.htm

Canada has stronger gun laws than the U. S. In Canada, 32 percent of homicides were committed with guns (Statistics Canada, Homicides by Method).

http://www40.statcan.gc.ca/l01/cst01/legal01-eng.htm

Where there are more guns, there are more gun deaths.

Gun death rates are 7 times higher in the states with the highest compared with the lowest household gun ownership. (Harvard Injury Control Research Center, 2009).

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/research...ath/index.html

Every time a gun injures or kills in self-defense, it is used:

11 times for completed and attempted suicides (Kellermann, 1998, p. 263).

7 times in criminal assaults and homicides, and

4 times in unintentional shooting deaths or injuries.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9715182

States within the highest quartile of firearm prevalence had firearm homicide rates 114% higher than states within the lowest quartile of firearm prevalence. Overall homicide rates were 60% higher.

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/pre...s01112007.html

Multivariate analyses found that states with higher rates of household firearm ownership had significantly higher homicide victimization rates of men, women and children.

Maybe you don't realize this, but not many people will read your entire message with this many links to it - and I doubt they follow the links, either.

Until Chuck gets rid of the gun in his home, I certainly won't entertain advice from him on getting rid of mine.

This is a classic Chuck tactic. You ask him a question, and rather just answering the question, he will bombard you with tons of links and rhetorical questioning. It's a weak attempt to side step a direct conversation.

Chuck, if you would like me to address one of your topics, please identify which one you want me to answer. I'm not interested in taking a good chunk of my morning reading a bunch of articles that you have archived on your computer. I have things to do today.

Classic Brandon tactic is to make a wealth of information a negative.

Well, the Supremes have spoken, the 2nd IS incorporated. Of course, we have better rights under Art 1, Sec 24 of our state constitution than that insured by the Federal, but all in all a good day.

(I also notice Chuck didn't link any of John Lott's work, such as that done for "More Guns, Less Crime" which was actually peer reviewed, unlike the tripe that the Brady Bunch puts out.

Well now Chicago is trying to pass another restrictive gun law. They will keep throwing up roadblocks till the Supreme Court says enough, and rules it is the individual law abiding citizen's right to own and carry firearms unobstructed by petty city ordinances.

Yep, the law of unintended consequences. But, Daley gets re-elected, and that is all he cares about. Of course, he has his armed body guards. Such hypocracy.
